FrSky Taranis Q X7

Regular Price:

The Taranis Q X7 is a breakthrough in power & features for a price that has never been seen in the hobby! 16 channels, full telemetry, speech and much more for the price of an entry level radio.

  • The Taranis Q X7, best know as the X7, is closely based on the very popular Taranis Plus, a radio that has been very well received thanks to its features and low price point. For the X7, FrSky has taken a close look at what could be improved, and focused on reducing the sell price, The end result is amazing. With nearly all of the power and features of the Taranis Plus, but a much lower price point.

First off you will notice the modern case design. While about the same size as the Taranis Plus, the ergonomics of the radio are excellent. Upon first contact with the radio you will feel the large rubber grips on the back, and notice the gentle angles on the front. The switches and sticks are perfectly located for both small and large hands. Trims are easy to get too, and the power switch is flush, and must be held down an extended period of time to turn off, you will not accidentally turn this radio off in flight! The navigation of the radio is greatly improved with a rotary encoder on the right of the screen, and 3 buttons on the left.

We like to point out one of the cool things about FrSky as a company, typically when a radio company comes out with a new lower price transmitter, they may severely limit the radio. FrSky does not do this. The X7 has nearly all of the same features as the Taranis Plus, Taranis X9E and even the top of the line Horus. They all have 16 channels, and can be expanded to 32 channels, FULL telemetry built in, speech, tons of mixing, lots of model memories, logic switches, the ability to base mixes off of telemetry data, external module bay, and so much more. It is much easier for me to tell you what this radio lacks when compared to the Taranis Plus. The X7 has a lower resolution LCD display, no micro SD card, no side sliders, no battery, and no battery charger. That is about all I can think of.

How about the cost of accessories? We all know that a low price transmitter is not much good if you don't have a nice selection of receivers and sensors. FrSky now offers one of the largest selections, but if that was not enough, they also have excellent prices on them! You can afford to outfit your fleet, and you will be confident knowing your models are well protected as FrSky's RF system is rock solid with an excellent reputation. There is a reason people trust their large scale, turbine and competition aircraft to FrSky!

Let's talk a bit about the battery options. FrSky has always used NiMH based batteries in their radios. They are cheap, work great and have no shipping restrictions, but some folks complain that they would rather use lithium based cells. Well, FrSky has listened. The X7 comes with a battery clip that you can drop in normal AA cells into, or you can remove the battery clip and use a 6 cell NiMH or 2S Lipo, Life or other battery pack. It just needs to fit in the battery compartment and have a 2S battery connector to plug into the X7. (These batteries will need to be charged externally from the radio.) All of the FrSky radios are very efficient, so regardless of what battery you select, you should be rewarded with long battery life.

The radio will be sold with different options. You may be able to select a NiMH battery pack at the time of purchase. Unless otherwise noted, it does not include a charger. You will need to use a smart charger to charge this battery.

Are you heavily invested in another RF system? No worries, the X7 has a normal JR style module bay on the back that will accept modules for other transmitting protocols. In the model setup you simply tell the system if you are using the external module, and it shuts down the internal FrSky module. Now you can use your UHF, Futaba, Spektrum, JR, Aisin, and other receivers if you have a transmitter module that fits in a JR style module bay.

The X7 ships with OpenTX 2.2 an open-source software that has been developed by hobbyist’s in the R/C community. The programmers of the transmitter’s firmware and companion software, which runs on Linux, Windows, and Macintosh, are very receptive to input and requests from users. If you can think of it, chances are the X7 is capable of doing it. If you are new to FrSky radios we highly recommend you add the user manual to your order, we had this professionally written and printed to help you learn your way around the radio and get you up to speed much faster! You will see this manual listed at the bottom of this page.

Note, we supply the radios in Mode 2 (Throttle on the left). In the video below we show you how to adjust your gimbals should you like a different mode. When removing the centering on the throttle gimbal, you do not need to adjust that first spring they show in this video, and please be very careful when closing the case, the pins in the module bay need to be carefully aligned, do not force the case shut! You can easily bend the module pins, and this is not covered under warranty.

    Get One and Enjoy!!

There was a big learning curve for me when I first got the X7 TX. I read a lot of online stuff, YouTube videos, and the OpenTx site. I also bought the manual sold by Aloft. I now feel very confident using it for all my applications even though I am not using its full capabilities. I really like it and enjoy having so much programming power. There is still lots of room for me to grow with this TX, which is why it is such a great value. No limits despite the low cost.
Service and support from Aloft are unsurpassed. Review by Hank • (Posted on 2/19/2018)

    Best radio out there!

I own several Frsky tx’s. I am not normally a thumb flyer but when I got my QX7, I converted! It fits my hand perfectly without the weight of the Horus. It has the just right amount of switches. I am into Opentx and have progressed into mixes, differential and throttle cuts. It is not difficult if you just watch the numerous videos. I added the M7 gimbals and the lotus stick ends for a very comfortable feel. Added to tha, is Aloft’ Great service. Review by Somiss1 • (Posted on 10/6/2017)

Can't beat the features and price.

I really like this radio! The learning curve may be a little steep but online help is more than sufficient. A good upgrade is the Nimh battery and charging kit, not necessary but makes charging more enjoyable. Review by slipshift • (Posted on 10/4/2017)

Great radio for newbies or veteran flyers

The first hobby grade radio I've ever bought and it's like night and day. It's easy to use. I wish it would have came with a manual but thanks to you guys at Aloft I ordered one just now. I have been doing pretty good just watching youtube videos but I like having a manual. I just hope it lasts so long I don't have to buy another unless I want an extra. It seems to be made pretty good though so I think it will. I really like the module bay on the back so I can buy a module that will talk to other protocols so I can fly my toy grade drones with a good controller. Review by Drok • (Posted on 9/24/2017)

    Great for drone simulation

Really enjoy the Qx7 transmitter. My main use for it right now is drone simulation on Liftoff simulator. Seems right do this before I invest in a real drone. Aloft had great shipping and prompt email updates on confirmation/shipping details. Arrived here safely and will do business again with Alofthobbies. Thanks again guys! Aloft Hobbies is top notch!

This was my first time ordering from Aloft Hobbies and everything was great! The radio was promptly shipped and arrived faster than I expected. They packaged everything well and there was none of the bumps and dents that come from buying straight from China. I do not know if Aloft Hobbies did this, but I was surprised to see the radio was already set up with the gimbal spring removed to fly in mode 2. There are 10,000 reviews of this radio so I won't go too much into detail, but highly recommend the Q X7 and Aloft Hobbies is top notch. Review by TheMint • (Posted on 8/5/2017)

Moving on to Qx7 from Turnigy 9XR.

So far so good. Moving on to Qx7 from Turnigy 9XR. Really enjoying the USB and ability to use it with Fpv Freerider and such. Feels solid and gives me all the functionality I need. Using it with brushless mini quads, motor gliders and random arduino projects. My current go-to.
I made a carrying case for it too : Review by DP • (Posted on 6/6/2017)

What more can you say about an excellent TX!!

What can you say about this TX that has not already been said!!! If you have used OpenTX previously you can figure this newer version without the additional manual. This TX has more features than I will ever may take me a while to find them all!!!! The on/off button is a real plus because it will be hard to accidentally switch it off. The case has a great feel and is well balanced with a neck strap. The only problem I had was loose springs in the battery box---but Aloft quickly sent me a new box. Thanks!! If you have not installed the optional charger one !! It makes charging a lot easier. R/C Aeromodeler ( English publication and the best in the World!!) is doing a review of the QX7 in their May issue. They reviewed the Horus in a earlier issue. You won't see this review in a US magazine as the "big boys" do not want anyone to know anything about a Fr Sky product since it has taken market share from them in Europe. Thanks Aloft for distributing FrSKy products!! Review by Old Flyer • (Posted on 5/22/2017)

    Q X7 Fantastic radio

This is a fantastic radio. I love the way it feels, and the sticks are real smooth. It took me a little while to adjust to the menu keys, and how the menu works. But now I can program my planes quickly and a lot easier than I could with the FS-THX9 I have been using. The fact that you can use a external module for the non FrSky receivers is a BIG PLUS. Be sure to get the SD card with the firmware and voice files with it. Having voice alerts is a real nice feature. This is probably the last TX I will have to buy. I have tried other and much more expensive TXs (DX-7, DX-9) and found them to be highly over rated and not reliable. The Q X7 seems to be of pretty good quality and capable of more features than I will probably ever use. I would highly recommend this radio for some one that is seriously intending to get started in this great RC hobby, and for those that want to upgrade to a fantastic radio that won't break the bank. Love it

Upgraded from a Flysky to the X7. A world of difference. The X7 has great range and functionality. Really like the audible prompts and alarms. Well worth the $110. Review by Terry in the Garage • (Posted on 4/18/2017)

Great entry into OpenTX at a bargain price.

This was my first venture into OpenTX. As an OG (Old Guy) I expected a learning curve with open TX but with the wealth of info on R/C Groups and YouTube the TX was up and running with Amber sound files, telemetry with voltage and a vario and a multi protocol module. There's still a lot to learn as I've just scratched the surface. For the price I'm happy with my purchase.
I didn't expect the Q X7 to be as good mechanically as my Futaba 9C or Spektrum TX's and it met those expectations. Sticks, switches, case quality are not on a par IMHO. I did not receive a battery pack with mine. The lack of a good battery and/or charging system is disappointing. I applaud the low opening price but the whole battery bay/connection scheme is lacking. Regardless this TX is a great value and a super way to move to OpenTX without breaking the bank.
Aloft's website was easy to use and my order shipped quickly. Unfortunately it didn't cross the country quickly taking another 10 days to make it to MA using FedEx Smart Post. I may have missed it but it would be nice if Aloft offered USPS Priority as an option. For only a few dollars more it makes it from Ca to MA in 2 to 3 days.
Wayne's input to RCG and videos show the dedication of the business to customer service - thanks!

Note: Aloft offers Priority Mail and FedEx services for faster delivery times. :) Review by Jim • (Posted on 3/29/2017)

    Awsome Taranis QX7

Great radio and cross between the X9D and the Horus, its absolutely perfect , at the moment i'm running with 8 double A batteries, out of this whole system is the only complaint i have doesn't have a rechargeable battery and a charger. im sure soon there will be after market items for this version of the Taranis. Aloft has been very quick in repairs of my Taranis Plus a few times and always got the radio back in 3 days, Aloft is the American outlet for Frsky and they stand by it firmly, another words super customer support Review by Steven • (Posted on 3/20/2017)

    I like it!

    I like it!
First flights today with my Smile DLG.
Open TX easy to program, although the new version of the software is a little different.
There is NOT a better bang for your buck.

Aloft hooked me up! shipped out fast

I absolutely love this thing. The price is great. The quality is great. Everyone was sold out but Aloft had one and shipped it out quickly. Love this thing Review by Colt • (Posted on 2/22/2017)

    Great radio

My version came with a 800mah NiMH battery. Although doesnt provide adapters to charge it with your standard 4 button charger. I made one out of a JST 2 cell balance plug and an xt60 connector. Works well enough. Other than that the radio is fantastic Review by Rio • (Posted on 2/19/2017)

GREAT value with this combination of hardware, firmware, and sales/support.

My first purchase from Aloft. Very happy with both the X7 and Aloft. It was shipped out next day and arrived cross country in 2 days.

X7 is very comfortable to hold. Don't think it will take too long for new switch positions and Open TX to come automatic, but I can already see that my next TX will be another with OpenTX. Probably another X7 as it is so feature rich and a great value.

Hoping to not need any service with this, but glad Wayne and Aloft are there if I ever do. Lots to love with this combination of hardware, firmware, and sales/support. Review by GottZoom • (Posted on 2/16/2017)

Excellent radio at an excellent price!

Excellent transmitter, especially for the price! I'm coming from years of Futaba and Spektrum, and wasn't sure what to expect with FrSky quality. But honestly this radio feels more expensive than it is, and the sheer power of Open-TX is incredible. I added one of the DM9 hack modules to allow use of my existing Spektrum receivers, and will slowly start switching over to FrSky receivers from here forward. Buy it - you'll love it! Unbelievable quality and price

I've long enjoyed OpenTX in my transmitters - even long before the first Taranis was sold. The trade off has always been that the quality of the transmitters that run OpenTX are not the very highest quality. The Taranis improved that deficiency considerably and is a good price for what you get. At only $105 (at the time this is written) the TaranisQ X7 has trumped all of the other transmitters available of any make. Quality equal to or better than the Taranis - and when M7 magnetic gimbals are available this transmitter will be unbeatable even @ for three times the price. Add to that the superlative service of Aloft Hobbies and this is a must have deal.
I'm extremely impressed with the ergonomics of the TaranisQ X7. Sound quality and rotary encoder give it the upper hand on it's older Taranis 9Xd+ brother - however the smaller screen leaves a little to be desired. Switch and gimbal quality is adequate - on par with current X9D+. Review by Fat Daddy • (Posted on 1/24/2017)

Try a QX7 from Aloft, you'll like it!

I really like the Qx7. I own several 9XD's from Aloft and was surprised how good the Qx7 is quality and feature wise, for the price! As always, Aloft delivered it fast with the lowest shipping possible with tracking, and in arrived in great condition. I bought white and like it. Review by Glen • (Posted on 1/22/2017)
